The Hutchinson Art Center is proud to present artist Julian Stropes in his exhibit, "Upping the Anti".

“Upping the Anti” presents a selection of sculptures and mixed media drawings made since the Charlottesville rally on August 11, 2017. Drawings were created daily in tandem with news reports, opinion pieces and speeches from across the political spectrum. Through the process of abstraction, the resulting texts and images vibrate between presence and absence, the recognizable and the unfamiliar, allowing multifaceted associations which reflect how political rhetoric and the histories we choose to remember continue to echo throughout time.

Julian Stropes was born and raised in Hutchinson, KS. He attended Boy's State of Kansas in 2008 where he drew political cartoons and in 2010 moved to Kansas City to attend the Kansas City Art Institute where he received a BFA in painting in 2014 and worked as a studio intern to Ricky Allman. His artwork has been shown at the Siena Art Institute in Italy, the Swimming Pool Project Space in Chicago, the Trust Arts Education Center in Pittsburgh as well as City Arts, Epsten Gallery, Cara y Cabezas, Vulpes Bastille and the H&R Block Artspace in Kansas City.
