Jack D. Crow

Jack was a Hutchinson native from a family who were among the first to settle here. He knew as a very young boy that he wanted to become an artist.

He enrolled in the Navy and was in the Occupation of Japan at the end of WWII. His role as artist was to photograph the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the atomic bomb, an experience which had a profound effect upon him.

On returning home, he attended The Kansas City Art Institute and married one of his classmates. Prior to his graduation, Pegues Department Store offered him their newly-created position of Art Director. He was instrumental in taking Pegues to national recognition for their forward-looking, artistic brand.

As his career advanced, he relocated his family first to Chicago and then to Arizona. His many clients included Marshall Fields and Goldwater’s Department Stores, as well as Esquire and Playboy magazines. He acted as either Art Director or Fashion Illustrator.

He was awarded a Rocky Mountain Emmy in 1978 for his courtroom drawings for the Phoenix NBC affiliate. This trial coverage was disseminated worldwide.

Being a jazz drummer, an exhibit of his drawings of jazz musicians was a natural for The Birger Sandzen gallery in Lindsborg to showcase him in a one man show in November of 1994.

He was politically engaged, a gourmet, world traveler, and bon vibant.

Wherever his life took him, he documented it in his drawings, paintings, or graphic designs.

We will be enjoying his art and refreshments from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. At that time we will share stories and tributes in this come-and-go event. Jack was a lifelong supporter of the Hutchinson Art Center. He would want all of you to join us in this celebration.

The display will remain up both Saturday and Sunday 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
