Why I Paint, written by Shirley Curiel:
"Art is my self-talk. It is me walking around in my head and making what I find there visible. When my thoughts become visible it helps me understand who I am and what I believe. I consider where I have been and determine where I wish to go.
Some of my paintings are like journal entries. They are not the actual place where this event in my life occurred. Rather as a painting evolved it stirred the memory of a meaningful event in my life. These paintings are tinted by the emotion that comes with the memories.
Of course, some of my paintings are of the here and now. Places so dear to remember, too important to allow the image to fade.
Art helps me see the world around me in a new and exciting way. The most common and overlooked objects become things of beauty and wonder. The weeds in a ditch, the shadows on the side of the shed made by the sun through the plum tree or a color combination I have never thought of, but there it is! Beautiful! I am never bored.
Art is very personal and putting it out in public can be intimidating. These few paintings and associated remarks are an invitation to walk with me a while. Something I once read has stayed.
“Art that pierces the heart cannot be taught. It grows from the soul of one and is picked by the searching heart of another.” (Author unknown to me)
I love that. Although I do not profess to make such art, it is a lovely prospect! Perhaps something you see here will strike a chord. Walk with me."
