MONTHLY CHILDREN’S ART PROJECTS

Join us for monthly children’s art projects here at the Hutchinson Art Center! Two groups will meet during a Saturday afternoon every month from September 2025 through May 2026. This is an opportunity for children aged 6 through 12 to create their own work of art! Students will be divided into two groups: Group A and Group B, with each group covering different skills. Group A meets from 1:00 to 2:30 PM, while Group B meets 3:00 to 4:30 PM. Each group art class costs $8 per child (except for May 2026’s classes, which are $10 for each child-and-parent pairing).

MEET THE TEACHER

Lindsborg, KS artist and educator Beckie Vega will be teaching the monthly children’s art projects for the 2025-2026 academic season!

Beckie Vega is an artist living and working in Lindsborg, Kansas. Her artwork centers around painting and drawing, representing a range of subject matter including the human figure, nature, and still life objects. Some of the most compelling imagery that she finds comes from her observation of the natural world, and her underlying concept for an artwork usually centers around a current idea of theme in her life. Prior to moving to Lindsborg, Beckie received her M.F.A. in painting from Stephen F. Austin State University (2019) and attended McMurry University for her B.A. in studio art (2015). Her artwork has most recently been featured in the 2025 Smoky Hill Art Exhibition.

Parents can register their child by purchasing a spot using the button below. Hurry! Registration is limited to 15 students/group per month.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to sign up their child for either Group A or Group B depending on skill level and interest. In general, the Group A project is simpler and aimed toward children aged 6-7, while the Group B project is a bit more complex and is aimed toward children aged 8-12.

We will announce specific art projects and their theme on a monthly basis through May, so check back here regularly to see what projects will be available for the month.

The theme for May is Printmaking!

Saturday, May 16th, 2026
DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS FRIDAY, May 15th at 4:30 PM

This month’s classes are special because this time we invite parents to join their child and create works of art together!

Students will learn and practice two types of printmaking – collagraph and intaglio – using everyday materials such as styrofoam and cardboard. Students will use skills in shape, space, and line.

During Group A’s classes, the instructor will introduce the two types of printmaking that students will be practicing. The collagraph technique will be introduced first. The instructor will show their example and demonstrate how to use the cardboard as a base for their stamp and then glue other cardboard shapes onto it to create a design. Students and parents will create at least one collagraph stamp. After students have created their collagraph stamp (partway through class), the instructor will demonstrate the intaglio printmaking method by “drawing” into a styrofoam piece to create an impression to stamp. While the glue on their relief stamps dry, students and parents will create at least one stamp using the intaglio method. When students have created both stamps, they will then select from a few tempera colors to use for printing. Students will use the brayers (rollers) to roll paint over their stamp designs and will then print their stamps on their papers.

During Group B’s classes, the instructor will introduce the two types of printmaking that students will be practicing. Advanced students are encouraged to plan out their design first. When students have created both stamps, they will then select from a few tempera colors to use for printing. Students will use the brayers (rollers) to roll paint over their stamp designs and will then print their stamps on their papers.
