MONTHLY CHILDREN’S ART PROJECTS

Join us for monthly children’s art projects here at the Hutchinson Art Center! Two groups will meet during a Saturday afternoon every month from September 2025 through May 2026. This is an opportunity for children aged 6 through 12 to create their own work of art! Students will be divided into two groups: Group A and Group B, with each group covering different skills. Group A meets from 1:00 to 2:30 PM, while Group B meets 3:00 to 4:30 PM. Each group art class costs $8 per child.

MEET THE TEACHER

Lindsborg, KS artist and educator Beckie Vega will be teaching the monthly children’s art projects for the 2025-2026 academic season!

Beckie Vega is an artist living and working in Lindsborg, Kansas. Her artwork centers around painting and drawing, representing a range of subject matter including the human figure, nature, and still life objects. Some of the most compelling imagery that she finds comes from her observation of the natural world, and her underlying concept for an artwork usually centers around a current idea of theme in her life. Prior to moving to Lindsborg, Beckie received her M.F.A. in painting from Stephen F. Austin State University (2019) and attended McMurry University for her B.A. in studio art (2015). Her artwork has most recently been featured in the 2025 Smoky Hill Art Exhibition.

The theme for January is Lester Raymer’s Sun Faces!

Saturday, January 24th, 2026
DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS FRIDAY, JANUARY 23RD at 4:30 PM

Students will learn about the artist Lester Raymer, how to draw basic facial features, collage techniques, color, line, texture, pattern, and variety.

Groups A and B will be introduced to the artwork of Lester Raymer, especially his sun quilt and the various sun faces. The instructor will give a brief overview of the project.

Group A will begin with pencil and paper, and the instructor will show how to draw basic facial features. Students will choose what type of facial features they want to draw and what kind of expression they want to convey. After drawing the sun face, students will design a pattern for the sun rays and the outside edge of their paper (to make it look like a quilt square). Once their sun design is complete, students will go over the pencil lines in marker, using a variety of colors. Students will then fill in some of their colored areas using colored pencils. When they are finished with the color, students will then choose various collage materials to glue down on the sun rays and add texture and pattern. Students can also add sun texture to the design on the edge of their papers.

Group B will be shown how to make sketches to plan out their sun face before they begin their final drawing. After students have made a few sketches, students will begin their sun face with pencil and paper, and the instructor will show how to draw different facial features. Students will choose what type of facial features they want to draw and what kind of expression they want to convey. After drawing the sun face, students will design a pattern for the sun rays and the outside edge of their paper (to make it look like a quilt square). Once their sun design is complete, students will lightly erase their pencil lines. Students will then choose a color palette for their sun faces and will use markers to go over their pencil lines as well as fill in some areas of the sun with colored pencils. When they are finished with the markers and pencils, students will then choose various collage materials to glue down on the sun rays and add texture and pattern. Students can also add sun texture to the design on the edge of their papers. Students will be encouraged to vary areas of texture with solid areas on their paper.
