MONTHLY CHILDREN’S ART PROJECTS

Join us for monthly children’s art projects here at the Hutchinson Art Center! Two groups will meet during a Saturday afternoon every month from September 2023 through May 2024. This is an opportunity for children aged 6 through 12 to create their own work of art! Students will be divided into two groups: Group A and Group B, with each group covering different skills. Each group art class costs $8 per child.

Local artist and educator Sara Huff has taught the monthly children’s art projects since February 2024. She has been involved in the arts in Hutchinson for over 20 years as an artist and educator and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Education at Wichita State University. She is looking forward to teaching these classes and getting to know her students this year!

Group A project

Group B project

This month, students will be learn about the color tones, shape, and line by creating their own paintings using warm and cool colors, drawing materials, and watercolor and resist techniques.

Group A will be creating cool and warm animal paintings with watercolors! Children will draw a simplified animal on watercolor paper that has a pre-applied rubber cement line element. They will use watercolors to bring their animal to life using warm or cool colors. They will dry their painting and peel off the rubber cement to reveal the white lines of the resist technique. Last, they will trace over their animal in oil pastels to finish the artwork. Children will learn different painting techniques, how resists work and work on their drawing skills.

Group B will be creating an abstract resist watercolor piece using geometric shapes. Children will learn about warm and cool colors, resist and watercolor techniques, and how line and patterns can add detail and interest to an artwork. Children will have the opportunity to choose their shape they want for their design, paint using warm and cool colors, remove the resist rubber cement and use sharpies to add details before they pull off the rubber cement resist to reveal their abstract masterpiece!

Parents and guardians are encouraged to sign up their child for either Group A or Group B depending on skill level and interest. In general, the Group A project is simpler and aimed toward children aged 6-7, while the Group B project is a bit more complex and is aimed toward children aged 8-12.

**Group A will meet 1:00 to 2:30 PM and Group B will meet 3:00 to 4:30 PM on Saturday, May 18th.**
