Sidewalk chalk painting WORKSHOP

Learn how to paint with sidewalk chalk with artist and educator Noreen Schroder!

Chalk Festivals have been around for decades and the original pavement art of madonnari has been around for centuries. Lately these festivals and this art form have seen a huge growth in popularity. The participation in an ephemeral piece makes it more about the act of creating than the creation itself for the artist. For the viewer, they have to connect with the piece in the moment of time that exists. This gives more of a sense of urgency and excitement. They feel like they are an important part of it, similar to an audience at live theater. Some chalk artists use a method of distorting their images to make them look 3D. This is called anamorphic art. This workshop will explore this style along with large 2d “paintings” which is the more traditional style of madonnari.

Noreen Schroder has been a lifelong artist and art instructor. She grew up on a farm in Iowa, got her Art Education Degree in Nebraska at UNO, moved to Colorado where she spent most of her adult life, then moved to Wichita recently. About 13 years ago, while living in the Denver area, she started participating in Chalk Art Festivals. Since then, she has traveled the country and has won awards and has been hired as festivals’ featured artist. Most of what she has learned through the years has been through trial and error and talking with other chalk artists. She is happy to pass some of that information on to you.

The Sidewalk Chalk Painting Workshop will take place from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on June 14th, July 12th, and August 8th. Each workshop will offer something different — so sign up for one day, two days, or all three days! This workshop is recommended for those high school age and up.
